Fix: An error occurred while communicating with the scanner. (-9923) – Mac OS X

If you attempt to scan a document, you receive an error about the scanner not being able to communicate. Powering on and off the scanner does not fix the issue. In addition, rebooting your Mac OS X machine does not fix the issue.

The issue is related to your network settings. In most cases, newer scanners and printers use IPv6 and IPv4 to communicate with each other. If you recently disabled IPv6 in Mac OS X, you may receive this error message. You can disable IPv6 on your scanner or printer to force it to us IPv4, or enable IPv6 in Mac OS X by following the steps below.

  1. Go to System Preferences -> Network -> (select your active green connection) -> Advanced -> TCP/IP tab.

  1. Under Configure IPv6, select Automatically.

Mac os x enable ipv6

  1. Try to scan or print again.
