The Remote Computer Requires Network Level Authentication Windows

If you attempt to remote desktop to a Windows machine, you may receive the following error message.

 

The remote computer requires Network Level Authentication, which your computer does not support. For assistance, contact your system administrator or technical support.

 

First, if you are using a certificate for remote desktop, delete the certificate if it is old and replace it if necessary.

 

Note: Even though the steps below apply to Windows XP, they are also valid for Windows 7. Follow the steps below to enable a registry setting.

 

  1. In Windows, go to Start -> Run and type regedit and hit enter.
 
  1. In the navigation pane, locate and then click the following registry subkey:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa
 
  1. In the details pane, right-click Security Packages -> Modify.




  1. In the Value data box, type tspkg. Click OK.
 
  1. In the navigation pane, locate and then click the following registry subkey:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\SecurityProviders
 
  1. In the details pane, right-click SecurityProviders -> Modify.
 
  1. In the Value data box, type credssp.dll. Click OK.
 
  1. Exit Registry Editor.
 
  1. Restart.
