Why: If You Have Just Taken Ownership of This Object – Windows

You receive a pop-up message attempting to take ownership of a Windows object (user, folder, file, etc.). After clicking “Ok” you notice that no changes were made. Try the following steps below to take full ownership of an object in Windows 10.

  1. Right-click the file or folder -> Properties -> Security -> Advanced.

  1. At the top of the window next to Owner select Change.

  1. Click Advanced at the bottom left and find the object you want to have permissions.

  1. Click Ok to close the Advanced box.

  1. If you are changing permission on a folder, select Replace owner on the subcontainers and objects then select Apply. Or, just select Apply otherwise.

  1. You will receive the If you have just taken ownership of this object… message – click Ok.

  1. Now, select Add then Select a principal.

  1. Click Advanced -> Find Now and choose the username then click OK. Modify the user access permissions as necessary and click OK on the remaining windows.
