Fix: iMessage Only Showing “chat” and Numbers Instead of Name – iOS
You may notice that some or all of your iPhone iMessages are only showing “chat1234567890” when viewing them, pictured above. Typically, you would see a name or number appear in this place. There are several things you can try to restore your iMessage names and numbers.
- Go to Settings -> Messages – iMessage and toggle off / on:
*iMessage
*MMS Messaging
*Group Messaging
- End iMessage (double-click home button and swipe up on iMessage).
- If all else fails, try to delete the iMessage conversation. It is possible the iMessage was somehow corrupted or the iMessage has become too long in some cases.

First off, thank you very much for this blog. Surprisingly, this is the only page I could find about this ‘glitch’ on my iPhone 6+ (currently, running on iOS 11.4).
I appreciate the solution to attempting to correct the issue. In retrospect, does anyone know what/how caused this to happen?
Any other iPhone users running into this...
By not being able to find any answers from the Apple forums to falling upon this one and only relatable blog/site... is making me conspiracally assume I have been bugged/wiretapped by some sort of entity...

Thank you for this but that didn’t work for me, my friends recently started a group chat and I have all their numbers saved in my contacts but instead of names, all it shows is their phone number. I tried doing this but it didn’t work.
